There is wonderful news for communities across rural England as alternative broadband provider Airband announces a fresh chapter in its leadership journey. The company, renowned for its commitment to connecting underserved areas, has appointed the experienced Jarlath Finnegan as its new Chairman. This positive step follows the departure of Ian Fishwick and marks a promising new era for the business.
Airband has already achieved remarkable success in bridging the digital divide. Their robust network, which combines Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technologies, now reaches more than 440,000 premises across over 200 communities in seven counties. This impressive coverage spans the Midlands, Cheshire, Oxfordshire, South West England, and North Wales. Currently, the provider serves 30,000 customers, with 175,000 premises ready for service via fibre and 265,000 via wireless.
The company's growth is further supported by significant investment from abrdn, which has contributed over £200m to help the business flourish. Additionally, Airband continues to expand its reach by partnering with Openreach to bring FTTP to off-net areas, ensuring even more households can access high-speed internet.
Jarlath Finnegan brings a wealth of industry knowledge to his new role. As a familiar figure in the sector, he previously served as Group CEO of All Points Fibre Networks and was most recently a Non-Executive Director for Wessex Internet. His appointment signals a clear focus on operational performance and disciplined growth.
Jarlath expressed his enthusiasm for the role, noting that Airband plays a vital part in improving connectivity for communities that have historically lacked access. He looks forward to working with the team to build on their strong foundations and develop a sustainable, profitable business that continues to deliver excellent service to its customers.
